AI interpreting: Possibilities and limits of the future method of interpreting

AI interpreting is a growing technology making it possible to overcome language barriers in a cost-efficient and automated way. Artificial intelligence (AI) transcribes and translates in real time, and can give you an audio reading of the translated transcript. This technology provides interesting advantages, however, there are still some limitations that come with it.

What exactly is KI interpreting?

  • Cost-efficiency: A big advantage of AI interpreting is the comparably low costs. You don’t have to pay for the travel and accommodation costs or salaries of human interpreters, which makes AI interpreting a cost-efficient alternative.
  • Transcription and written translation included: Using AI interpreting means that you automatically get a transcription of the original plus its written translation, both provided as scrolling text on the screen. This is particularly useful when you need a written documentation of your event or want to guarantee accessiblity for everybody.
  • Choose the voice you want: Customers have the possibility to select the AI voice they want to hear – male or female.
  • Wide range of languages: AI interpreting systems provide you with an impressive range of languages, making it a good alternative for international events and discussions.

Limitations of AI interpreting

Although AI interpreting has many advantages, there are significant disadvantages which need to be taken into account:

  • Time delay: The audio reproduction can be delayed for up to a minute, since the original speech is transcribed and then translated by the system before the AI voice reads the written translation of the transcript. This delay can be disruptive for listeners.
  • Lack of emotion: AI voices lack emotions; they cannot reflect the emotional nuances of the original speaker. Therefore, the speech can be less effective in another language.
  • Difficulties with complex speech: AI interpreting often has difficulties with complex speech, dialects, accents, idiomatic expressions, and proper names. Additionally, the cultural context often is not correctly perceived.

Lack of inclusion of context and body language: Human interpreters include body language or emotional nuances which are important for a conversation or a speech. AI interpreting is not able to do this. In situations which require a high level of interpersonal communication and understanding, AI systems quickly get into trouble.

When is AI interpreting useful/beneficial

AI interpreting systems are particularly useful for simple, impersonal conversations or events where cost-efficiency is most important and any language-specific nuances are less important. For complex topics or sensitive conversations requiring a deep understanding of language and culture, a human interpreter is still the best choice.
